A RIGHT Royal knees up has been had across the area despite the rain.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee has been marked with a wide variety of street parties and other events in the district.

At Sainsbury's in Warwick, a tea party was held on Friday (June 1) for ten specially-selected grandmothers. The store had asked children to explain why their own grandparents were deserving of an invite and the top ten entries were chosen.

Residents of Broad Street in Warwick held their street party on Friday. Taking place before the rain came, there was a good turn out for food, drink and a celebratory spread, with music and dancing until late and special lanterns lit.

Leamington mayor, coun Yvonne Moore, was guest of honour at a tea party at The Kingsley School on Friday.

She joined the whole school – aged three right through to sixth formers - for a street party style afternoon tea in the hall, which was decorated with red, white and blue bunting, balloons and flags.

Coun Moore presented specially-commissioned Jubilee mugs to students before unveiling a commemorative bench in the school garden, which is made from part of the trunk of a copper beech tree which stood in the school grounds for 300 years until it had to be felled due to an untreatable disease.

Residents of Gaveston Road/Greatheed Road/Freemans Close in Leamington also got into the spirit with a street party featuring all the usual fair.

The cul-de-sac of Campion Green in North Leamington continued its long tradition of street parties, despite the weather.

Residents have held such parties in 1945 to celebrate Victory in Europe (VE) Day, and again in 1977 for the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

For their latest party this weekend, the community pooled resources to put on an impressive spread of food and drink and improvised a network of gazebos to keep the rain off.

And no one enjoyed it more than original residents of the 1930s close – Margaret Salter and Vicky Garbett - who were there at the beginning in 1945 as well as the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Crackley School in Kenilworth marked the Diamond Jubilee in some style as teachers, pupils and parents came together for a performance of 'An Elizabethan Tale' by the children, taking guests on a journey through time, from the dawning of the second Elizabethan age to the present day.

Little Maisie Dixon, five, was crowned Queen at Lillington Parish Church on Sunday (June 3) to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

The reverend, Charlotte Gale, also explained during the event the Christian significance of items used in the 1953 Coronation, including the crown, orb, sceptre and anointing spoon.

Staff from companies in Leamington's Waterloo Place came together on Friday (June 1) for an afternoon tea party featuring fancy dress and a best hat competition.

Sainsbury's Leamington held a celebratory lunch in the canteen on Thursday (May 31) in which talented local chef Sue Fanshaw baked a cake in honour of the occasion.

A street party featuring water bombs and cricket was also held in Helmsdale Road, Lillington.
