A PENSIONER has been jailed for 12 years after a jury convicted him of repeatedly sexually abusing four of his children more than 30 years ago.

The 71-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identities of his victims, had pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court to a total of 11 offences against his children.

But after considering their verdicts over two days, the jury found the pensioner, who lived in a mid-Warwickshire village, guilty of all 11 charges.

Jailing the pensioner, who was cleared of a further allegation of indecently assaulting one of his grandchildren in the mid 1980s, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones also ordered him to register as a sex offender for life.

Prosecutor Simon Ward had told the jury: “We are dealing with people who have lived for decades with what has happened to them. Eventually they reached the stage where they can tell – and that stage is now.

“The main complainants in this case are three daughters and one son of this defendant; and the issue in each of these cases is ‘did it happen at all?’ His case is that they are lying, and that no such things ever happened to them.

“The prosecution say that not only was there a habit, as it became, to commit sexual offences against his children, but he also beat them with implements.

“They were not simply being told off, but chastised to a point where they were physically afraid of this man.”

His first victim was one of his daughters who was aged about eight when in the early 1970s.

He carried on abusing her, and on occasions when she was unable to do so, her father abused her sister, who was about nine.

They told their mother what was happening, but quickly regretted it because she took her husband’s side after he convinced her the girls were lying.

On one occasion he made one of their brothers carry out a sex act on him and warned him never to tell anyone - and he kept quiet until the police investigation in November 2010.

The defendant began sexually abusing his youngest daughter when she was aged just six.

She told her headmaster – but when he spoke to the defendant he claimed it was a lie to divert attention from her having stolen some money from him.

When he was finally arrested the pensioner claimed his children had put their heads together to make up lies about him.
