THE NEW headteacher of Lillington Nursery and Primary School has promised he will turn it into a centre the whole community can be proud of.

Derek Fance has spent the last decade in deputy teaching roles at inner city schools in Birmingham but insists the fact that some areas are deprived can never be used as an excuse for poor educational standards.

The Kenilworth resident, who has two young sons with wife Deborah, the headteacher at Whitnash Primary School, told the Observer: “Lillington was a school I had always been aware of, in terms of its negative perception with some people.

“It struck me as school with a lot of potential. Exciting times are ahead. The children and staff are amazing and we all want to give the community a school they can be proud of.

“We think of children getting ready for school each day but I believe the school also has to be ready for the children.

“Children only get one chance and I know from having two young sons how important it is they get a good start in life, a solid education.”
