THIEVES caused part of Warwick community centre's roof to collapse after stealing lead from its roof.
Just a week after Clapham Terrace Primary School in Leamington was targeted in the same way, The Gap in Oakwood Grove was struck over the weekend of April 20 and 21.
The caretaker noticed a puddle inside the building before torrential rain led to further water leaking in. On Friday (April 27) part of the roofing in a corridor collapsed.
The damage has now been repaired and centre director Vicki Jones told the paper: “Thankfully we managed to stay open every day as the damage was restricted to just one area, but we've had to pay for all the repair work as well as cleaning up. We decided not to use lead again for the roof so hopefully we won't be targeted again.
“We understand 36 square feet of lead was stolen from the roof in total. We do have cameras or a caretaker or other people regularly on the site, but the thieves must have struck one night.”
Police in Warwick are now investigating.
As we reported last week, Clapham Terrace Primary School was targeted by lead thieves over the Easter weekend and water damage there - to several classrooms, kitchens and a computer suite – forced it to close for a full day.
