WARWICK Boat Club opened their National Club League West Midlands Regional Division campaign in fine style by defeating Pershore 5-1.
The Boat Club quartet of captain Paul Martin, Jon Isaacs, Gez McVeigh and Hugh Jaques proved too strong for the youthful Pershore team who gained promotion to the regional division last season.
Straight sets singles victories from Martin, Jaques and Isaacs handed the Boat Club an early 3-1 lead. McVeigh had a tough match against a higher-rated opponent, but was unable to prevail despite many close games.
Top doubles pairing Martin and Jaques won comfortably, while McVeigh and Isaacs came from behind to seal an encouraging success.
McVeigh and Isaacs lost the opening set 6-2 but rallied strongly and saved two match points before winning a very tight second set 7-5.
The third set was also close but McVeigh and Isaacs held things together after an early break to triumph 6-4.
The Boat Club are second in the table behind the Shrewsbury baswed Welti club who won their opening match 6-0.
The next match for Warwick Boat Club is on April 29 at David Lloyd Cardiff who also won their first match of the season.
