CHAMPIONS Khalsa brought the curtain down on an exceptional season by cruising to a 6-1 ENER-G Midlands League Premier Division victory over Telford & Wrekin on Saturday.
The impressive success also earned Khalsa sweet revenge as their title hopes last season were dashed after being held to a 2-2 draw in their final game at Telford.
Hot-shot Gary Ghattuara led the rout by bagging a smart four goal haul which took his tally to 32 and earned the reward as top marksman in the division.
A large crowd ensured there was a carnival atmosphere at St Nicholas Park and Khalsa produced some excellent hockey to match the glorious conditions.
The back four of Aaron Nagra, Pummi Singh, Scott Angliss and Chris Darling laid the platform by starting a string of promising moves.
Captain Sean Robinson opened the scoring with a powerful shot into the bottom corner but it required a superb save from Nick Mills to prevent an equaliser from Telford who also hit the upright form a short corner.
But Khalsa remained on top and Mickey Hayer fired just wide before Aaron Nagra doubled the lead from a short corner.
The second half was even more entertaining with supporters treated to a fest of goals.
Dharminder Hundal stretched the advantage by showing composure, skill and class with a reverse stick strike into the bottom corner.
Jas Singh was instrumental in creating Ghattaura’s first of the game and he quickly added another by producing some excellent stick skills to beat a defender and wrong-foot the keeper.
Telford reduced the arrears but Khalsa ended their memorable championship winning season in fine style with Ghattaura on hand to apply the finishing touch to a move which included more than 20 passes.
Khalsa won 21 of their 22 league matches to finish 15 points clear at the top of the table and they were presented with the trophy at the end of the match after which the celebrations began.
