THE Royal Regiment of Fusiliers were special guests at the third Cleary's Boxing Gym annual dinner show at Warwick School's Guy Nelson Hall on Saturday night.
The Fusiliers, whose regimental museum is situated in the town, had eight boxers in action who helped treat the 500-strong crowd to a feast of boxing.
Gym owner Edwin Cleary worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get 13 well matched bouts which included seven of his own boxers.
It was a case of mixed fortunes for the local fighters with Cale Sunner (Cleary's ABC) suffering a 27-15 defeat in the opening bout against Reece Hackett (Studio ABC).
Michael Jephcote (Cleary's ABC) produced a competent display which was rewarded with a convincing 23-7 success over Nathan Whitehouse (Bulkington), while Nav Manku (Cleary's ABC) delivered a good solid performance in defeating Lance Corporal Sandford 17-7 despite suffering a sprained ankle in the opening round.
Ben Daly (Cleary's ABC) stormed into a commanding 18 point lead following two good rounds but tired badly in the final round and was edged out 22-21 by Fusilier Harris.
Mike Cole (Cleary's ABC), who was making his final appearance in the ring, signed off in fine style by overcoming the previously unbeaten Corporal Ray 32-29 in a brusing contest.
Both boxers showed excellent fitness levels by trading punches in a thrilling bout which deservedly earned the pair a standing ovation and the best bout of the night award.
The busy Myles Vale (Cleary's ABC) needed to be at his best to edge a 23-18 verdict over the durable and previously unbeaten Fusilier Chilton, while Ben Castle (Cleary's ABC) was beaten 22-9 by Stefan Johansenn (Stratford ABC).
John Mason (Warwick Racing ABC) was outpointed 12-7 by Gino Jones (Coventry Boys) in the final bout of the evening.
Other results - Johnny Cawley (Bulkington ABC) beat Ryan Hibberd (Stratford ABC) on countback after an 18-18 draw; Charlie Bradley (Coventry Boys Club) beat Fusilier Morris rsc in round two; Fusilier Knight beat Danny Hussain (Priory Park) 16-7; Sikander Rasool (Priory Park) beat Fusilier Sedgewick 15-13; Josh McIntosh (Spit 'n Sawdust ABC) beat Fusilier Johnson 13-8.
The evening, which was organised by Ade Bush and Chris Sunner and sponsored by Fitzpatrick Fitters Ltd, proved a huge success with an auction raising £380 for the Fallen Heroes charity.
