Rugby Union
OLs stroll to Shield victory

04/01 Updated: 11/01 14:21

IN-FORM OLs cruised to a comprehensive Warwickshire Shield victory on Saturday.

The opening 15 minutes were keenly contested but once winger Liam Wellings sprinted clear to open the scoring the game turned in OLs favour.

A second try followed after a series of forward mauls when prop Craig Ellis went over.

Shortly afterwards a good three-quarter move saw centre Dave Canning finish off with a try near the posts and fellow centre Tom Hyam completed another flowing move to add a fourth try.

Wellings gathered another measured pass from Canning and scored his second try of the game but in doing so tweaked his hamstring and had to leave the field.

OLs continued to press and it was not long before second row Dan Careless crossed for the visitors sixth try before the interval.

OLs remained in control throughout the second half but they were denied by a combination of resolute defence by the hosts and sloppy handling.

They managed only one further try by hooker Chris Huckvale after a well timed pass from winger Matt Hyam following a strong 30 metre run down the touchline.

Prop Craig Ellis, second row Bill Johnson and back row Heslop starred for the visitors.

OLs return to Midlands Three West (South) action by entertaining Redditch this Saturday (2.15pm).
