BOSSES of the world's oldest real tennis club, based in Leamington, believe they are onto a winner after securing a new license.

Leamington Real Tennis Club, founded in 1846, has secured the right to host a number of events, including live boxing. Owners believe the new agreement will help improve the financial future of the historic Bedford Street club.

Midlands solicitors Wright Hassall took part in a review of the licensing arrangements at the venue and worker Andrew Potts said: “The licence previously held by the club wasn’t really suitable as it did not permit them to make best use of their fantastic facilities either for visiting players or for hosting events.

“We managed to secure a licence which will allow the club to sell alcohol to club members and visiting players until midnight during the week and 2am at weekends as well as hosting events that could include boxing and wrestling on a once in a calendar year basis.

“There were three objections to this application from local residents but following discussions between all parties, as well as the police, an agreement was reached and everyone is happy with the outcome.”
