BEING chief bridesmaid at your sister's wedding, followed by a week with a cold and minimal training, is hardly the best preparation for a European big city half-marathon but that was Leamington C & AC's Sue Harrison's build up for the Brussels race on Sunday.
Harrison was initially in the leading group, staying with Belgium's Catherine Lallemand for the first three miles of the course which is recognised as one of the hilliest in Europe
Lallemand slowly started to open up a small gap and Harriaon's lack of opportunity to prepare properly meant she was unable to stay with the leader, but managed to keep her in sight for most of the race.
Harrison passed the 10k mark in 39 minutes and the 10 mile mark in 63 minutes before finally crossing the finish line in a satisfying 2nd place, although she was disappointed with her time of 83-22.
Previously the race had never attracted more than 2,000 entries but this year a record 4,398 runners crossed the finish line, with Harrison, who is supported by LA Fitness Warwick and Warwick Sports shop, finishing 55th overall.
Her second place in the women's race also saw her claim victory in the Masters event. The podium presentation saw Belgium's Catherine Lallemand take top spot in 80.50, Harrison second and Mirjam Bijlsma from the Netherlands take third in 85.17.
