FORMER Coventry City goalkeeper Gary Montgomery has secured a professional contract with Lancashire County Cricket Club for the 2010 season.
The talented 26-year-old Leamington-born left-arm seamer was handed an extended trial by Lancashire CCC throughout August during which he caught the eye of director of cricket Mike Watkinson with a string of promising performances for the 2nd XI.
Montgomery took 26 wickets in eight matches, including impressive match figures of 10-92 against Nottinghamshire 2nds, and as a result signed his first professional cricket contract on Monday.
It is a tremendous achievement for former Leamington CC player Montgomery whose cricketing appearances have been limited in recent years due to his professional football career which started at Coventry City in 1999.
Montgomery made his debut for Coventry a day after his 19th birthday in a Carling Cup tie against Chelsea at Highfield Road and went on to play around 50 games in the Football League Championship for both the Sky Blues and Rotherham United before joining League Two outfit Grimsby Town at the beginning of the 2007-2008 campaign.
He failed to make an impact at Blundell Park and was released at the end of last season which allowed him to concentrate on cricket during the summer.
Montgomery, who lives in Sheffield, helped Treeton win the South Yorkshire Premier League title and also had a trial with Warwickshire CCC before setting his sights on a career at Old Trafford.
The versatile Montgomery now joins an elite band of sportsmen who have landed professional contracts in both football and cricket.
