BILL Bryson heads an all-star line-up of leading figures from the world of books and theatre being hosted by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford this autumn.
Best-selling authors and theatre directors talking exclusively about their latest projects.
Topping the bill is best selling travel writer Bill Bryson who will be joining Trust Chairman, Professor Stanley Wells, on November 25 for an evening of conversation and readings from his forthcoming illustrated edition of Shakespeare - The World as a Stage.
Best known for his witty travel books, such as Notes from A Small Island and A Walk in the Woods, Bryson’s unique take on Shakespeare has brought the Bard’s biography to a whole new audience. An Evening with Bill Bryson will offer a rare opportunity to hear the author discussing his own - and Shakespeare’s - writing career.
The autumn also sees an expanded programme of lunchtime literary talks at the Henley Street Centre, all starting at 1pm. They include:
* October 7 - Actor Nick Asbury, a member of the RSC’s Histories ensemble, recalls his adventures ons tage - and online as a blog writer - during the course of the celebrated two-year project, and reads from his recently published book, the curiously titled Exit Pursued by a Badger.
* October 22 - RSC Chief Associate Director Greg Doran discusses his new publication The Shakespeare Almanac, a fanatically researched day-by-day account of the customs, beliefs and historical events in the Shakespearian calendar.
* November 6 - Professor Hermione Lee, academic and critically-acclaimed biographer (Virginia Woolf, Edith Warton) marks the 300th anniversary of the first extended account of Shakespeare's life with a talk on the art of biography, using Shakespeare as a prime example.
* November 18 - In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, Professor David Crystal - the world's leading authorities on language - explores how the Sonnets would have sounded in Original Pronunciation, with readings by actor and writer Ben Crystal.
After every event there will be a discounted bookstall and speakers will be available to sign copies of their books. Admission to lunchtime literary talks is £4 (concessions £3.50, Friends of SBT £3), payable on the door.
